The cold season is here, and there's plenty you can do to keep the winter blues away You've been tossing and turning all night. When you wake up in the morning your throat feels like it's been rubbed down with a cheese grater, your eyes start to water and you have an uncontrollable desire to sneeze. Unfortunately, this is an experience that many of us go through during the winter months - the onset of the common cold. Or, if you're particularly unlucky, the more severe influenza.
Dr Mark Atkinson, holistic medical physician and consultant in clinical nutrition says: "When it comes to colds and flu, prevention is always best. My recommendation is to take a combination of the immune boosting herb Astragalus and the antioxidant Vitamin C continuously between the months of October and March, this should help to keep a cold at bay. If however, the early signs of a cold do appear, add the immune stimulating Echinacea to your supplement programme for two weeks and use Eucalyptus Oil steam inhalations to clear your nose - plus remember to take plenty of rest and fluids!"
Astragalus' immune-supporting properties have been valued by the Chinese for centuries. Containing several key ingredients, including amino acids, polysaccharides, triterpene glycosides, flavonoids, isoflavones, saponins and trace minerals, studies have recently confirmed it's immune-supporting propertiesand it has been shown to decrease the severity and duration of the common cold.
Eucalyptus oil is one of the most popular and frequently used essential oils. It is obtained from the leaves of the tree by the process of steam extraction. A steam bath may help a blocked nose - simply fill a large bowl with boiling water and add a drop or two of Eucalyptus oil , then place a towel over your head and the bowl to trap the steam so you can breathe it in. A few drops of Eucalyptus Oil on a pillow may also greatly help to decongest a blocked nose and ensure an undisturbed night's sleep.
Echinacea is believed to have immune supporting properties. The immune system is our first line of defence against infection and a strong immune system may shake off winter ailments. Several double-blind studies have confirmed the benefit of Echinacea for treating colds and flu.
Vitamin C's powerful anti-oxidant properties have long been recognised as being critical to good health and recent trials have shown Vitamin C to be an effective cold preventative. Effervescent Vitamin C tablets allow fast absorption into the blood stream and are a fun and easy way to ensure you maintain good levels throughout winter.
